Preparation Instructions Before Your Sinus Surgery Procedure
Summary
Undergoing sinus surgery is a significant step towards better sinus health. Preparing for this procedure is crucial to ensure your safety and the best possible outcome. This handout will guide you through the necessary steps to take before your surgery, from managing medications to knowing when to arrive at the hospital.
What Is This & Why It Matters
Sinus surgery is a procedure designed to improve airflow and drainage in your nasal passages. Proper preparation helps reduce the risks of infection and bleeding during and after the surgery. By following these guidelines, you can ensure a smoother surgical experience and recovery process. The American Academy of Otolaryngology - Head and Neck Surgery (AAO-HNS) provides recommendations for Functional Endoscopic Sinus Surgery (FESS) preparation, which we have incorporated here.
What You Should Do
- Review any specific instructions provided by your surgeon and ask questions if anything is unclear.
- Confirm which medications, if any, you should stop taking before the surgery. This includes blood thinners and certain herbal supplements.
- Arrange for transportation to and from the hospital as you will not be able to drive post-surgery.
- Plan to arrive at the hospital at least two hours before your scheduled surgery time.
- Sign all necessary consent forms prior to surgery day to avoid delays.
- Follow your doctor's instructions regarding fasting – typically, do not eat or drink anything for 6-8 hours before surgery.
- Prepare comfortable clothing to wear on the day of surgery, preferably with a front opening for easy access.
- Ensure you have someone available to assist you at home during your initial recovery period.
- Make a list of any allergies or medical conditions you have, as well as any medications you're currently taking, to share with your healthcare team.
- Practice relaxation techniques or breathing exercises if you feel anxious about the procedure.
What You Should NOT Do
- Do not consume alcohol or recreational drugs at least 24 hours before your surgery.
- Avoid taking aspirin or other anti-inflammatory medications unless specifically advised by your doctor.
- Refrain from wearing makeup, lotions, perfumes, or deodorants on the day of surgery.
- Do not eat heavy meals or foods that may upset your stomach the night before surgery.
- Avoid smoking for at least 48 hours prior to surgery as it can interfere with anesthesia and healing.
- Do not bring valuable items like jewelry or large sums of money with you.
